Enterprise Architecture
By: Andrew Sandon

Enterprise Architecture
There is a wide range of forces acting upon organizations which influence its performance. These forces can be summarized in five broad concepts: changing technology; knowledge explosion rapid product obsolescence; changing nature of the workforce; and quality or working life. Resources are the core part of any organization. Organizations should take into account internal and external factors that influence the company. Organizations can only perform effectively through interactions with the broader external environment of which it is part. The structure and function¬ing of organizations must reflect, therefore, the nature of the environment in which it is operating.

Recent years organizations pay a special attention to enterprise architecture because effective¬ness of any organization depends upon the efficient use of resources, in particular information systems, organizational sub-units, and personnel. Often, enterprise architecture is associated with information technology and relates more broadly to the practice of business optimization in that it addresses business architecture and organizational information support system.

Enterprise Architecture is "an activity that by its very nature deals with uncertainty and change - the "grey area" between what stakeholders aspire to and what can be specified and engineered as a solution. Architecture requirements are therefore invariably subject to change in practice." (Architecture Forum, n.d.).

The overall purpose of Enterprise Architecture is to ensure that the organiza¬tion is able to achieve success through IT. Enterprise Architecture can be the source of organizational capabilities that allow firms to learn and capitalize on new opportunities especially in IT industry which operates in rapidly changing environment. While innovations in high technology often receive the greatest publicity, advances have been made in many fields and at many levels of Information Technology. Implementing enterprise architecture involved documenting strategy of the organization and how it operates.

b) Enterprise Architecture helps to identify business processes and information about how those processes are performed. In general, enterprise architecture is a part of the management process con¬cerned with the institution and carrying out of procedures by which the pro¬gramme is laid down and communicated, and the progress of activities is regulated and checked against targets and plans.

Enterprise architecture can improve organizational performance in a number of ways through ability to control and manage the development environment. Also, the potential impact involves effective change process and technological innovations constructed in the best possible way to meet the needs of a particular organization. For instance, "Business Scenarios are an appropriate and useful technique to discover and document business requirements, and to articulate an architectural vision that responds to those requirements" (Architecture Forum, n.d.). Most programs of IT development are designed in accord¬ance with the culture and specific requirements of the particular segment and the demands of particular jobs. Nevertheless, these changes have a great impact on organizations changing their traditional ways of business (Harmon, 2002).

c) A course of action for organization can be based on Architecture Requirements Management or Capability Maturity Models that address a particular problem by "providing an effective and proven method for an organization to gradually gain control over and improve its IT related development processes" (Architecture Forum. n.d). The first step is problem identification and documentation of requirements that is aimed to identify the areas of changes; the second step is program development and baseline requirements, the third step is an implementation phase which involves assessment of changed requirements on current phase and revision for past phases; the forth one is control of outputs. If the enterprise architecture is inappropriate, this can be costly and inefficient. To avoid this situation an organization should take into account internal and external factors influenced its performance.

It is possible to conclude that Enterprise Architecture is a part of an integrated process which is involved with all the other aspects of the business. Organizations operate in changing environment and that is why there is a constant need in changes and improvement to meets the company's goals and satisfy its needs.
